As a complement to our Fall Preview this week, Nicole Sweeney will spin selections by related artists on Evening Jazz. Here she calls out some highlights to listen for.
Monday
Pat Metheny, “Make a New World”
Pat Metheny’s music has a way of making you float while still feeling grounded on this earth. We’ll hear “Make a New World,” a track from his new album that will make you close your eyes and transport you to another place — call it Pat’s world of music (which in my opinion is a pretty cool place to be). We’ll also hear a track from Every Breath I Take, the latest from Cécile McLorin Salvant and Metropole Orkest, as well as music by pianist Danilo Pérez and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt.
Tuesday
Samara Joy, “Day By Day”
Chances are, you’ve heard Samara Joy’s name many times over the past several years — and Joy couldn’t be a more perfect name, because I’ve witnessed her music bring that quality to people from all walks of life. She’ll put a smile on your face with her big band on Evening Jazz with “Day by Day.”
Wednesday
Marcus Miller, “Slippin’ Into Darkness”
Marcus Miller plays bass that you can feel in the deepest parts of your soul, all the way down to your toes. From playing with Miles Davis to working with Luther Vandross, he knows his way around feel-good music. He makes that evident on this cover of a song by War, “Slippin’ Into Darkness.” We’ll also hear from another artist in the Fall Preview lineup: Rudresh Manhanthappa’s Hero Trio, with their version of George Michael’s “Faith.”
Thursday
Chucho Valdés, “Rhapsody in Blue”
While they say “age ain’t nothing but a number,” I try not to miss the chance to highlight a living legend of this music. Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés will turn 85 in October, and he’s celebrating with a live performance at the Exit Zero Jazz Festival. We’ll start the party a little early with his version of “Rhapsody in Blue.” We’ll also hear tracks from John Scofield’s A Go Go and Lakecia Benjamin’s We Dream.
