Renowned Fine Art Photographer Andrea Baldeck's New Book

The in-demand fine art photographer Andrea Baldeck has a new book out - Bones, Books, and Bell Jars: Photographs of the Mutter Museum.  Its black-and-white close ups of  soft-tissue medical specimens, hard human skeletons, and shiny steel instruments bring together just a few of Baldeck’s lifelong interests.

Andrea Baldeck began her adult life as a physician, and turned to photography in the early 1990s. She traces her love affair with the camera to visits to the George Eastman house with her father when she was five years old, and her fascination with medicine to hours in childhood consuming books about adventurer doctors.

WRTI's Jim Cotter speaks with Baldeck about her book. It joins a portfolio of work that includes portraits, still lives, and landscapes, in which Baldeck shares her visual curiosity and unique perspective on a variety of subjects as exotic as life in the Himalayas and Haiti, and as ordinary as household objects and garden produce.

Andea Baldeck’s  latest collection, Bones, Books, and Bell Jars: Photographs of the Mutter Museum is published by The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. A companion exhibition at the Mutter Museum runs through December, 2012.
