Nine Lives, with Chris Coles and Sean Jones

Ways To Subscribe

We’re switching things up this episode, with a field report from the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival. WRTI’s Josh Jackson subs in for Greg, talking with Nate about their rich experience at the fest. And they sit down to converse with saxophonist Chris Coles and trumpeter Sean Jones, who had both just performed a powerful suite titled Nine Lives at the August Wilson African-American Cultural Center. Coles composed this suite in response to the 2015 mass shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C., and he and Jones speak eloquently about the power of grace, the call to forgiveness — and a quietly thriving jazz scene in Akron, Ohio, just over the state line from Pittsburgh.

Nate Chinen has been writing about music for more than 25 years. He spent a dozen of them working as a critic for The New York Times, and helmed a long-running column for JazzTimes. As Editorial Director at WRTI, he oversees a range of classical and jazz coverage, and contributes regularly to NPR.
Josh Jackson is the associate general manager for programming and content at WRTI.
