LIVE from Verizon Hall on WRTI: The Philadelphia Orchestra, Richard Woodhams, Rachmaninoff, Mozart

Jun 9, 2019

On Sunday, June 16th, from 2 to 4 PM, WRTI 90.1's Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast comes to you LIVE from the Kimmel Center. Yannick Nézét-Séguin conducts the Philadelphians in Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 1, and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, k 297b. WRTI's Gregg Whiteside is your host.

Richard Woodhams, the Philadelphia Orchestra’s principal oboe from 1977 until his retirement at the end of last season, returns for this encore collaboration with his principal colleagues in Mozart's delightful quartet for winds and orchestra. Joining Mr. Woodhams are principal clarinet Ricardo Morales, principal bassoon Daniel Matsukawa, and principal horn Jennifer Montone.

Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 1 suffered one of music’s most disastrous first performances. Inadequate rehearsal time led to poor execution, scathing reviews, and shattered self-confidence for the composer. And when Rachmaninoff emigrated in 1918 the score was left behind in Russia, and subsequently lost.

It was only in 1944 that the original orchestral parts were rediscovered, allowing the symphony to be reconstructed and performed in Moscow in 1945. It then became clear that this was the boldest and most interesting Russian symphony in the decade after Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique.

Also on Sunday’s program, a work by Anna Clyne that premiered in 2013 at the Last Night of the Proms, Masquerade. Drawing its inspiration from the original mid-18th century promenade concerts held in London's pleasure gardens, it’s a richly orchestrated work that includes an old English country dance melody, and a drinking song to add a festive flair to the afternoon’s program.

During intermission, WRTI’s Susan Lewis will speak backstage with oboist Richard Woodhams, and bassoonist Daniel Matsukawa.

If you can’t get tickets to the concert on Saturday or Sunday, WRTI 90.1 will bring it to you LIVE from 2 to 4 PM on June 16th.
