The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert on WRTI: A New Broadcast Season Begins!

Pianist Yuja Wang is soloist in the first encore broadcast of the 2016-2017 season of The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert on WRTI, July 16th at 1 pm

The Philadelphia Orchestra’s 2016-17 season is under way with Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium for his fifth year as music director of the Orchestra. WRTI will broadcast all 30 subscription concerts beginning Sunday, November 20th.The broadcast season kicks off with Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with piano megastar Yuja Wang, and Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

Yannick’s multi-season focus on the great musical cities of the world, American sounds, opera, theatrically rooted works, and sacred music will continue this season, with music inspired by Paris weaving throughout the season.

A three-week Paris Festival will be a highlight of the 2016-17 season.

American Sounds will be explored through works by Mason Bates, Christopher Theofanidis, and Leonard Bernstein; and there will be two world premieres — an Organ Concerto by Christopher Rouse, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Kimmel Center’s Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ, and featuring organist  Paul Jacobs; and Principal Percussionist Christopher Deviney’s Imaginary Day, a duo concerto based on music by Pat Metheny.

Distinguished guest conductors and soloists range from rising stars to living legends, among them Yuja Wang, Stéphane Tétreault, Midori, Itzhak Perlman, André Watts, Daniil Trifonov, Gianandrea Noseda, and Herbert Blomstedt.

Conductor Laureate Charles Dutoit returns this season with Britten’s War Requiem and Principal Guest Conductor Stéphane Denève conducts a Rachmaninoff Festival, with broadcasts to come in June, 2017.

Gregg was the host of WRTI's morning drive show from 2012 until his retirement from WRTI in January, 2021. He began producing and hosting The Philadelphia Orchestra In Concert broadcasts in 2013, joining the Orchestra in Hong Kong for the first-ever live international radio broadcasts from that island in 2016, and in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for two historic broadcasts in 2018. You can still hear Gregg as host of the Orchestra broadcasts every Sunday and Monday on WRTI.
