There are over 50 AVA graduates who have joined the Metropolitan Opera’s roster since 1980, and AVA alumni are heard in the great opera houses around the world every season. These are very talented young singers!

AVA holds the Giargiari Bel Canto Competition at the Kimmel Center's Perelman Theater every year to highlight the best emerging operatic talent. Prizes are awarded by a professional panel of judges and by the audience themselves. Take a look at AVA resident artist bios here.

The competition is a concert experience unlike any other in Philadelphia in that it requires all vocalists to perform an aria in the "bel canto" vocal technique.

AVA alumni are heard in the great opera houses around the world.

Bel canto, which is translated as “beautiful singing” in Italian, is an operatic vocal style most popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The highly artistic technique emphasizes the evenness and richness of tone, and smooth phrasing.

Previous Giargiari winners include international opera stars Stephen Costello, Angela Meade, Richard Troxell, Joyce El-Khoury, James Valenti, and Latonia Moore. AVA alumnus James Morris and Josh Winograde from the Metropolitan Opera are among the judges.

Listen on Saturday, October 14th at 4 pm! And don't forget to vote! The Giargiari Bel Canto Competition from Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts on WRTI 90.1.
