A band led by one of the great innovators of jazz education is gearing up for a big night in the Big Apple. The Temple University Jazz All Star Concert is on January 30th, 8 pm, in the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and leader Terell Stafford has assembled some of the finest all-star guests imaginable.
Joining the Temple Jazz Band and the Terell Stafford Quintet will be Joe Lovano, Rene Marie, Jon Faddis, Jimmy Heath, John Clayton and Dick Oatts. To add to the star-studded evening, Terell’s Quartet will consist of Tim Warfield, Bruce Barth, Rodney Green and David Wong. Tickets here!
Each year, jazz musicians young and old gather at Lincoln Center to put on a fabulous show celebrating jazz education. This concert will be a perfect mix of students, Temple University faculty, and guest artists getting together to show what they have done for jazz, and what jazz has done for them.
To prepare for the big night, WRTI 90.1 will feature music from the guest artists during regular jazz times. We'll also broadcast some pieces of music from the Temple Jazz Band’s Winter Concert—these tunes are exclusive to WRTI.
In case you missed it, WRTI Jazz Host J. Michael Harrison featured an interview with Terell Stafford last Friday night. They discussed how Terell got his start in jazz and jazz education, including being chosen to tour with superstar saxophonist Bobby Watson.
I said, “Why? Why did you choose me? There’s so many great players in New York.” I said “I’m appreciative but I’m just, I’m just curious.” And so he goes, “Ya know, the music is the end result. Friendship, humility, loyalty, honesty, clarity, that’s what I look for. And then, after that, we know the music is gonna be OK.”
J. Michael will feature the conclusion of that conversation on The Bridge, Friday, January 26th at 10:45 pm.
