Listen: Preview of Curtis Student Recitals, Amit Melzer and Maria Iodenitch from WRTI 90.1

Every year, Philadelphia-area residents have the chance to experience, for free, the talents of exceptional young student vocalists, instrumentalists, conductors, and composers from the Curtis Institute of Music  before they take the world by musical storm.

On Monday, March 26th, violinist Maria Ioudenitch and hornist Amit Melzer performed selections from their upcoming senior recitals, including works by Alexander Glazunov, Pablo de Sarasate, and Robert Schumann. They were accompanied by fellow student, pianist Yiyang Ruan.

It’s just a sample of what’s coming up at Curtis, as the famed music conservatory opens its doors all spring to let audiences hear the next generation of classical music artists. 

Recitals take place on most Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings at 8 pm in Field Concert Hall. Detailed schedule and program information. Recital Hotline is 215-893-5261.

Maria Ioudenitch was born in Balashov, Russia, and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. She has appeared as a soloist with the Kansas City and Tupelo symphonies; the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra; the Mariinsky Orchestra; the Prince George's Philharmonic;   Her awards include first prize at the Kansas City Young Artist Competition and second prize at the Johansen International Competition for Young String Players. She was also invited to perform for Van Cliburn at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of his triumph at the First Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow; and has been heard on NPR's From the Top.

Maria’s graduation recital takes place on Wednesday, March 28 at 8 pm in Field Concert Hall at 1726 Locust Street. She'll play works by Falla, Glazunov, Mozart, Prokofiev, Sarasate, Schumann, and Tchaikovsky.

Amit Melzer, from Tel Aviv, is currently principal horn of Symphony in C. He has performed as a soloist with Symphony in C and the Thelma Yellin Symphony Orchestra; and as a substitute horn player with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Mariinsky Orchestra, Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra, Israel Symphony Orchestra-Rishon Letzion, Tel Aviv Soloists Ensemble, and Israel Chamber Orchestra, among others. He was awarded full scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation for the years 2008 through 2016. 

Amit's graduation recital takes place Wednesday, April 4th at 8 pm in Field Concert Hall at 1726 Locust Street. He'll play works by Mozart, Rosetti, and Schumann. 

Accompanying Maria and Amit at WRTI will be Yiyang Ruan, from Xiamen, China.  He has appeared as a soloist with the China Philharmonic Orchestra, and was the third prize winner of the China Central Television Piano Competition. He entered Curtis in 2017.
