Jazz Album of the Week: Tony Bennett and Diana Krall's Love Letter to the Gershwins

Tony Bennett and Diana Krall: Love Is Here To Stay

October 1, 2018. Tony Bennett has a knack for choosing the perfect people to record with. At age 92, the crooner has five duet albums under his belt, mostly with all-star personnel. Love Is Here To Stay finds Bennett paired with his longtime friend Diana Krall, and the chemistry is magical.

Each known for their cool delivery, the pair is backed by the impeccable Bill Charlap Trio, which, in my mind, makes this a true jazz album. The repertoire is Gershwin; so listening to this release is the perfect way to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the birth of George Gershwin that was on September 26th, 2018.

The twosome do an up-tempo version of “Fascinating Rhythm” reminiscent of Tony’s 1949 version of the tune.  It was so early in his career that he was a twenty-three year old unknown, and going by the name Joe Bari.  This updated version proves that Tony has no intention of slowing down.

Tony and Diana bounce off of each other playfully and effectively on tunes like “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” and “Do It Again.” The Gershwin compositions make for an extremely familiar and fun track list, the singers have star power and the band is absolutely on point.
