WRTI's NPR Live Sessions Video of the Week: Trumpeter and Vocalist Bria Skonberg

Christine Vaindirlis
Trumpeter Bria Skonberg

January 27, 2020. Canadian-born Bria Skonberg has dazzled audiences worldwide with her distinctive vocal stylings and true chops on the trumpet. Her original song “So Is The Day” has taken on a life of its own over the years. It was the title track of her 2012 release, and appears again on Bria’s newest offering Nothing Never Happens.

Regarding the tune’s reappearance, Bria stated, “It’s stuck with me because as I’ve grown, and as I’ve gone through different things, it has grown with me, and I just interpreted it in different ways along the way, so I decided to re-record it for this album.”

Bria was joined by keyboardist John Thomas, bassist Devin Starks and Philadelphia drummer Khary Shaheed. Please enjoy this extraordinary performance of WRTI's NPR Live Sessions Video of the Week.

This performance made waves for those privy to the debut recording along with audiences who are hearing the song for the first time in this video. “What a treat it was to have Bria Skonberg visit our radio station for a live performance and video stream,” reflects WRTI Jazz Host and Live Sessions Executive Producer J. Michael Harrison. “Witnessing Bria demonstrate her special brand of creativity, utilizing both her trumpet and her voice, provided a standout presentation that we’re excited to share with you.”
