Join us on Sunday, March 14th at 1 PM on WRTI 90.1 and Monday, March 15th at 7 PM on WRTI HD-2 to hear a 2018 concert broadcast from the Orchestra’s British Isles Festival conducted by Fabio Luisi.
It began with the last symphony of Joseph Haydn, the 104th, the so-called “London.” Haydn composed most of his symphonies for private performances at the palaces of his employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, but he produced his late ones for public concerts in France and England. The last twelve are known generally as the “London” symphonies, and the 104th in D Major shows the old master at the summit of his imaginative powers.
Haydn left behind a promising young pupil when he departed for England, the 23 year-old Ludwig van Beethoven, who was making a name for himself as a pianist and composer. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is a transitional piece that bridges his early Classical style with his fully mature middle period, and it was performed brilliantly in this concert by the renowned Yefim Bronfman.

After intermission, it’s music from Richard Wagner’s path-breaking opera Tristan and Isolde, telling the story of an Irish princess who falls in love with Tristan as he brings her to Cornwall to marry his uncle. The course of their tragic love is prefigured in the haunting Prelude, which in this performance is followed by the “Liebestod.”
Fabio Luisi, the guest conductor for this performance, is the general music director of the Zurich Opera, the chief conductor of the Danish National Symphony, and music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
During intermission, Debra Lew Harder speaks with Mr. Bronfman, and Bliss Michelson with Maestro Luisi.
