This month, The Late Set podcast celebrates our two-year anniversary. That’s more than 40 episodes and interviews from some of the most inspired minds in jazz. Now we’re bringing the podcast to the airwaves as part of our new Sunday rotation programming at WRTI. The Late Set Radio Hour will air at 8 p.m. on the last Sunday of every month.
The Late Set Radio Hour is an adaptation of our podcast, hosted by Evening Jazz host Nicole Sweeney. We’ve taken interview highlights from the pod and packaged them around full musical selections. It gives us the freedom to tease specific moments from the conversations and reinforce them with a WRTI hallmark: great music curation.
The show’s broadcast debut, on Sunday, Oct. 26, happens to fall on the 83rd birthday of Brazilian musical legend Milton Nascimento. So we thought we’d share a fitting first episode of The Late Set Radio Hour, featuring Nate Chinen’s conversation with bassist, singer and composer esperanza spalding, all about the intergenerational summit Milton + esperanza. We’ll share music from that project as well as selections from Nascimento’s historic collaboration with Wayne Shorter, Native Dancer.

Future installments of The Late Set Radio Hour will feature alto saxophonist Gary Bartz, vocalists Samara Joy and Gregory Porter, harpist Brandee Younger and many more. Even if you’ve heard their episodes on the podcast feed, we know you’ll enjoy the show and its musical mix. But speaking of the podcast: rest assured, The Late Set isn’t going anywhere! We’ll continue to publish new episodes every two weeks. Be sure to subscribe here, or wherever you listen to podcasts. And tell a friend!
