Watch the Jaleel Shaw Trio play "Impressions," for Coltrane 100

Growing up in Philadelphia, Jaleel Shaw got the know the legacy of John Coltrane at human scale. As a kid, he spent many hours at the Coltrane House in Strawberry Mansion, visiting with Cousin Mary Alexander, who even had him play concerts in the backyard. Shaw told this story on Coltrane's 100th birthday, at A Love Park Supreme, where he played a tribute with bassist Alexander Claffy and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts.

The event — co-presented by WRTI, Coltrane 100 Philly and the office of State Senator Vincent Hughes — brought hundreds of people to Love Park in the heart of Philadelphia to honor Coltrane's music and legacy. WRTI is proud to share video of "Impressions," which opened the concert in a spirit of celebration and expedition.
