Lise and Liszt: A Love Story

A young French pianist performing a work by a beloved composer is featured this Sunday on WRTI's Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast. Jim Cotter reports on the artistic affections for a great 19th-century romantic by one of his finest contemporary interpreters.

Lise de la Salle says she fell in love with the music of Franz Liszt in her early teens. She says his great melody lines captured her young heart. Liszt himself wished that performances of his works should “speak, to weep and sing and sigh” and de la Salle has clearly made those emotional connections and commitments both on stage and in the studio.

So much so that her second and third recordings, released respectively in 2005 and 2008, both featuring works by Liszt received the rare accolade of GRAMOPHONE magazine's "Record of the Month" and "Editor’s Choice," while her 2011 all-Liszt CD was also "Record of the Month."  de la Salle says he is one composer who will always be a part of who she is.

In a program that also features works by Beethoven and Respighi, The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert this Sunday, December 1st at 1 pm on WRTI, features Lise de la Salle performing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No 2.
