Classical Album of the Week: The LA Philharmonic Plays Movie Music by John Williams

July 22, 2019. Two musical forces of nature join together in a live performance of fantasy, adventure and romance. Our WRTI Classical Album of the Week and Film at Five weekday feature combine in this powerful Deutsche Grammophon album, Celebrating John Williams.

Gustavo Dudamel leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in this album, released in March, with recordings from a live performance in January of this year at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The album features many of Williams’ most beloved themes, from Star Wars and Superman to Harry Potter Schindler's List, and Indiana Jones.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic shares a long history with Williams, who first conducted the orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl in 1978. And at Williams’ personal request, Gustavo Dudamel conducted on the soundtrack for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

"What Dudamel evokes is a Williams world where good triumphs over bad, where vistas open and where sounds produce enchantment." —Los Angeles Times.

A veteran broadcaster, Kevin garnered a wealth of experience in radio before taking the weekday classical host position from 2 to 6 PM at WRTI, where he was on the air until his retirement in March 2023.
