Charles Tolliver is a model for autonomy and self-sufficiency in music. His work as a founder of Strata-East Records set a standard for black creative independence in the 1970s, and the label's extensive catalogue has enjoyed a renaissance as new generations discover those seminal recordings under the catch-all term of "spiritual" jazz.

The delightful ladies of DivaNation Philly have been singing together for over five years throughout the Philadelphia region. Several members of the collective recently joined Jazz Host J. Michael Harrison live in the WRTI 90.1 Performance Studio to present a preview of "Vibing for Spring"—their upcoming March 9th performance at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts.

The passing of Don Gardner earlier this week has his legions of loved ones and friends bewildered, because his death was both surprising and sudden.

State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery County) and his wife Sheryl Lee Ralph will honor local jazz musical legends at their 3rd annual Jazz Legacy Awards, which takes place on July 27th from 12 noon to 2 PM at the Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts, 738 S. Broad St. in Philadelphia.
