Listen: Mezzo-Soprano Chrystal E. Williams LIVE from the WRTI 90.1 Performance Studio

Mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williams

Join us on Friday at 12:10 pm to hear mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williams, winner of Astral’s 2014 National Auditions, singing LIVE from WRTI’s Performance Studio.

She’ll perform selections from her upcoming recital on Feb. 11th at the American Philosophical Society, titled "Their Voices Live On," including works by Federico Garcia Lorca, Maurice Ravel, H. Leslie Adams, and H. T. Burleigh. Watch our Facebook LIVE video!

Laurent Philippe will accompany Ms. Williams on piano. WRTI’s Susan Lewis will host.

With a voice called ‘fiery and gorgeous’ by Opera News, Ms. Williams is equally at home on the stage and in the concert hall. She’s performed with operas and orchestras around the US and abroad. Philadelphia audiences have seen Ms. Williams with The Philadelphia Orchestra and as Rebecca in Charlie Parker’s YARDBIRD, a role she created for Opera Philadelphia, took to the Apollo theater in Harlem, and will revisit in a production for Arizona Opera.

She has curated her upcoming recital to bring her own story to life. That program at the American Philosophical Society will include spirituals, works by Maurice Ravel and Federico Garcia Lorca, and a world premiere featuring Brazilian folk music and Felippe Hostins on accordian.

Ms. Williams is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon, the Yale School of Music, and The Academy of Vocal Arts. In 2004, she founded The Chrystal E Williams Scholarship to help students wishing to pursue a career in the performing arts.

Tune in Friday, February 9th at 12:10 to hear Chrystal E. Williams LIVE on WRTI 90.1, the WRTI mobile app, and streaming at WRTI.org. And check out her recital on Sunday, Feb. 11th at the American Philosophical Society, Benjamin Franklin Hall, 427 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia.

Susan writes and produces stories about music and the arts. She’s host and producer of WRTI’s TIME IN online interview series, and contributes weekly intermission interviews for The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert series. She’s also been a regular host of WRTI’s Live from the Performance Studio sessions.
