Not only does Jin Hi Kim play a traditional Korean 4th century instrument, she does it in a way that makes it her own. Jin Hi joined us in the WRTI Performance Studio to demonstrate her unique stylings on the komungo. WRTI’s J. Michael Harrison was host for the live performance with the komungo virtuoso, who is known for introducing the instrument to the American contemporary music scene.

Not only is Kim playing a scarcely known instrument, she is the pioneer for electrifying it with a live interactive MIDI computer system. The trailblazer is a Guggenheim Fellow, and has performed her own compositions at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Freer Gallery of Art, Asia Society, Royal Festival Hall in London and other institutions around the world.
This live performance will feature the world’s only electric komungo, and Kim’s compositional concept “Living Tones,” emerging from Korean traditional music in cross-cultural chamber and orchestral compositions. Be sure to watch and listen to learn more about the beauty and exclusivity of the art of Jin Hi Kim.
The K Now Concert: Digital Buddha with Jin Hi Kim and percussionist/visual artist Gerry Hemingway is at International House Philadelphia on October 25th at 7 PM.
