October 29, 2018. Praising his "mastery of the keyboard" and the "poetry of his interpretation," Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin says Danill Trifonov is "probably the closest we have today to what Rachmaninov was." Trifonov joins Yannick and The Philadelphia Orchestra in Destination Rachmaninov - Departure, documenting a journey of artistic exploration.
The album features Rachmaninov's Piano Concertos 2 and 4, with a Bach Partita transcribed by Rachmaninov in between. It's part of a cycle of the complete Rachmaninov concertos recorded for Deutsche Grammophon.
In town to perform the 4th concerto with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Trifonov spoke about the sense of Russian folk tales in the work, "with a lot of changing of characters, of scenes and very mysterious... there is always some magic."
