Spotlight: Jazz is Dead — Thursday, Ardmore Music Hall
Since it first formed more than 25 years ago, armed with a catchy name and a cool idea, Jazz is Dead has both deepened and transcended the premise of Grateful Dead tunes as newfangled standards. Its lineup has also undergone shift changes, retaining only electric bassist Alphonso Johnson, an alumnus of Weather Report. The other members, in its current form, are guitarists Steve Kimock and Bobby Lee Rodgers and drummer Pete Lavezzoli.
The band — not to be confused with the Jazz is Dead album series co-curated by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad — rolls into town on its Days Between tour. That’s a reference any Deadhead should understand, and the regular clientele at Ardmore Music Hall includes more than a few of those.
Aug. 1 at 8 p.m., Ardmore Music Hall, 23 East Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore, $30-$69; purchase tickets.
Nu School Collective — Monday, Solar Myth
Kayla Childs, the keyboardist, vocalist and beatmaker also known as Black Buttafly, spearheads this aptly named, groove-forward monthly series at Solar Myth. In this first iteration, she’ll be joined by her regular collaborator Nazir Ebo on drums, as well as Immanuel Wilkins on alto saxophone, Tone Whitfield on bass and Keyanna Hutchinson on guitar. The Philly-native singer-songwriter and keyboardist Jonill will perform an opening set.
July 29 at 8 p.m., Solar Myth, 1131 South Broad Street, $20; tickets and information.

Lafayette Gilchrist Sextet — Friday, Chris’ Jazz Cafe
Rhythm is a whole-body experience in Lafayette Gilchrist’s music, whether it’s expressed in hard-bop or head-nod terms. A pianist rooted in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., he packs a lot of knockabout groove into his new album Undaunted, drawing on go-go and gospel music alike. The album has received generous acclaim, and Gilchrist is now taking its message on the road.
Aug. 2 at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Chris’ Jazz Cafe, $25, $80 and $100, with dinner packages; purchase tickets.
Peter White feat. Gerald Veasley Band — Saturday, The Mann Center
The English guitarist and keyboardist Peter White has a sterling reputation in the smooth-jazz realm, and as a cheery brand ambassador: if you haven’t traveled in or out of Taiwan over the last several years, you may not be aware that his most recent album is Music for STARLUX Airlines. He performs on the Mann Center’s Jazz Under the Stars series with some overqualified local backing from the Gerald Veasley Band.
Aug. 3 at 8 p.m., TD Pavillion at The Mann, 5201 Parkside Avenue, $45; tickets and information.
