Prior to enrolling at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Arturo studied at the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory in Havana.  His decision to relocate to Puebla, Mexico after conservatory provided an opportunity for him to encounter jazz and other music from around the world.  He followed up his stint at Berklee with a master's degree from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Arturo has an extensive amount of experience as a clinician.  He has also held the Chair of the Hand Drum Department at the University of the Arts and has collaborated with several universities in the USA, Europe and South America in the past.  Arturo has served on the board of governors at the Philadelphia chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science (NARAS) and is a member of the American Society for Composers and Publishers (ASCAP).

Arturo has performed at venues and festivals around the world and has several recordings to his credit, starting with his first release in 2004 titled 3rd Step.  He followed that project with Notes on Canvas in 2007 featuring Grammy Award winners Paquito D'Rivera and David Sanchez.  2009 brought the world his album titled Call.  He collaborated on a wonderful duet project with Elio Villafranca title Dos Y Mas in 2012.  His 2013 offering Cuban Crosshatching features jazz notables, Lionel Loueke and Seamus Blake.

Arturo recently celebrated the first anniversary of his increasingly popular living room concert series titled "notsolatin." This gathering has blossomed into a much-anticipated weekly event that brings together members of his South Philadelphia community, musicians from around the city and fans who love great music and incredible food.

J. Michael Harrison’s first radio show, WPEB’s “Is That Jazz” launched in June of 1993. In 1994 he began volunteering with WRTI as a production assistant. In 1996, J. Michael debuted his own program, The Bridge, which continues to air Friday evenings on WRTI.
