Thinking about the legacy of jazz pianist Bill Evans, you might be surprised to know that some cool cats named Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, and—especially—Johann Sebastian Bach helped shape his sound.

March 12, 2018. At age 75, Dr. Lonnie Smith still knows how to party. His new release, All In My Mind, was recorded last summer at his birthday celebration at The Jazz Standard in New York City. Guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and drummer Johnathan Blake make this a trio record to remember.

Week of February 26, 2018. Puerto de Buenos Aires 1933: El Eco With Guillermo Nojechowicz. In his latest album, Argentine-born drummer and composer Guillermo Nojechowicz creates an expansive soundscape inspired his grandmother’s journey from Warsaw to Buenos Aires to escape rising anti-Semitism.

Born in New York City to Jewish-German immigrants, Lorenz Hart penned some of Broadway’s most haunting, sophisticated lyrics. He began collaborating with composer Richard Rodgers when he was 24 and Rodgers 17.

Join WRTI 90.1 as we recognize Black History Month by celebrating jazz artists and songs that were synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement. During regular jazz hours, we'll bring you this music and discuss its political connections.

While you're celebrating the Eagles big win, we have the perfect jazz tunes to keep your spirits high. WRTI's Maureen Malloy has put together this playlist with the Eagles' victory in mind.

Philadelphians have a lot of cheering to do these days, and not just about the Eagles—although we do love to do that! Nine artists from the area are nominated for 2018 Grammy Awards, or are named in connection with them. Here’s a rundown to get you ready for the ceremony.  Most of the awards will be given out during a live stream broadcast Sunday afternoon between 3 pm and 6 pm.  The rest are reserved for the CBS telecast at 7:30 pm.
