Trumpet

From the pop of the first note, you know you're in for a musical treat. The ear candy you've enjoyed was created by Courtney Wright, a member of the youth collective that comprises the Delaware-based Boysie Lowery Living Jazz Residency.

Trumpeter Arnetta Johnson discovered the trumpet a dozen years ago as a "band geek" at Creative and Performing Arts High School in Camden, NJ, and went on to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Mentored by both Jill Scott and Tia Fuller, Arnetta blossomed from her first professional gig with the Unity Community Center's (UCC) Little Jazz Giants, to being the featured trumpeter on both Beyoncé Formation and On The Run II tours.

April 6, 2020. Trumpeter John Vanore’s newest release is not very new at all. It was actually recorded in the mid '80s, with no intention of release. Vanore, and fellow Philadelphian, pianist Ron Thomas, were experimenting with some music from that time. Vanore discovered these tunes on cassette in his basement, and now we have Primary Colors, a chill, yet electric album that touches on the familiar (of 1985).

February 24, 2020. Late in 2018, trumpeter Joe Magnarelli released his latest record, If You Could See Me Now. Curious title—might Magnarelli have been slyly foreshadowing his forthcoming appearance on WRTI’s NPR Live Sessions series? Anything’s possible. Though it’s much more plausible that the album takes its name from the iconic tune Tadd Dameron composed for Sarah Vaughan in 1946.

The Wall Street Journal describes trumpeter and vocalist Bria Skonberg as "one of the most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation."  Bria and her band visit with J. Michael Harrison in the WRTI Performance Studio for a live video presentation on Friday, November 15th at 4 PM.

September 23, 2019. Imagine Sting playing just one more sold-out gig with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers as The Police. Or maybe Alexander Hamilton and George Washington getting together to teach the new country they built how to say goodbye, just "one last time."

April 15, 2019. On trumpeter Josh Lawrence’s latest, Triptych, it’s hard to see the forest through the "threes." Of the album’s 10 tracks, nine of them are divided into three distinct suites of three-movements apiece.

The trumpet was the instrument of kings, in court and on the battlefield. Today the orchestral trumpet is an instrument for virtuosos, and used for a variety of purposes. WRTI’s Susan Lewis has more.
